Photojournalism
Photos are just as important as the article itself.
I mainly use my phone to take photos. I believe iPhones have the capability of taking professional photos if you know how to use them correctly. I learned how to adjust my camera to the right settings and utilize the tools provided to the best of their abilities to take clear and crisp pictures. Below are some examples:
About: I wrote an article about the true cost of fast fashion. For this photo, I filled a brown paper bag with clothes and made sure to add enough so that it looked like it was spilling out. I edited it so the background was black for dramatic effect.

About: I covered our school’s environmental club’s spring evet and took this photo of a kid at the craft station. This was by far one of my favorite pictures I took that day.

About: I wrote a profile on a biology teacher who was retiring that year. She had a huge tank filled with goldfish and in the article, she mentioned her love for nature and animals. I thought making her pose next to the fish was perfect to capture her personality.

About: After seeing the rise of xenophobia against Asians at the start of the pandemic, I wrote an article condemning it. I used my sister as a model and wrote “I AM NOT A VIRUS” on a mask to represent the mistreatment of innocent Asians and the belief that they are the cause of COVID-19.

STEM Night
About: The chemistry club I was a part of during my sophomore year participated in an elementary school’s STEM night. The event also showcased the 6th graders science presentations they took months working on. Below are some of the highlights of the night.

Pan-Asian Celebration
About: May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month. During that time, all of the Asian clubs at our school hold an event showcasing Asian students in the community. Students and members in the community perform dances, sing songs, play instruments, and sell delicious food. I wrote about the event and took photos. I sat near the stage to get up close and constantly had to adjust the lighting accordingly in order to achieve the best looking photos.
